Spend some time exploring the space around Blackbird Caye Resort and you’re bound to notice some of our more prominent locals: Crocodylus acutus, also known as the American Crocodile.

These large, grey reptiles call the Caribbean Basin their home, and are considered a vulnerable species due to their declining habitat and the chances of becoming endangered in the future.

One of the best ways to check out these primeval apex predators is during kayaking excursions around Turneffe Atoll as you explore the mangrove creeks, coral gardens, and uninhabited cayes (at least, uninhabited by humans).

It may go without saying, but we’ll say it anyways: don’t feed the crocodiles! 😉
