Did you know that it’s a holiday today in Belize?
Which holiday, you ask? Why, it’s Garifuna Settlement Day!
Created by one of our civil rights activists, Thomas Ramos, we’ve been celebrating Garifuna Settlement Day since the 1940s before it became a national holiday in 1977.
Depending on where you find yourself in Belize today, there may or may not be celebrations, music, festivities. If you happen to be in Dangriga, well, you’re in for a treat. Take a moment to soak it in, absorb some of our Garifuna culture, and recognize the history of today.
On days like today it is important to take note of our shared heritage.
Of course, it’s also a great day to spend at the beach or beneath the waves…
